Animation of the Film

Small look into a short animated moment of Hades dynamic movement
In regards to the animation and production of the film, nothing is out of the ordinary for a Disney movie, however the processes it takes to create an animated film are vastly different than a typical live action film that we are used to seeing. For example, every single frame was hand drawn for exact emotion and precise movement (see GIF to the left for an example). The attention to detail doing something by hand as well as the ability to draw things that can't be filmed, like the storm titans, gave creative liberties to the filmmakers that would be missed out on in live action. Giving the film creators the platform of animation allows for movement or actions unreasonable or impossible for live action to recreate, allowing the directors to be more cartoony or unrealistic with their portrayals of characters and interactions. For example, the fight of the river spirit could have been much more violent or gritty, however if you go frame by frame you can see the extent of movement a character goes through when hit or punched to add the effect of rubbery bodies for comedic effect. Like when Pegasus kicks the Spirit in the head, a frame by frame analysis shows the spirit straight up forming around the hoof, an act genuinely impossible to recreate. Talking more about the animation process, with the lack of camera input or any input at all, the sound is added in post production, sound like character dialogue, effects and background noise. The ability of post production additions allowed moments that would be pretty simple like when “Pain” and “Panic” were falling down the stairs to greed Hades at the gates or rather the entrance to Hades castle, every step and action had a little sound effect to go with it, easily noticeable but when you look at the film in the perspective of only having visuals and everything is secondary, you gain insight on how much effort went into keeping the film full of life. Another small example is after Hercules accidentally destroys the plaza or market place, the townspeople can be heard grumbling and stepping away from Hercules having him act as the source of audio. Doing this gives the viewers the subconscious awareness that Hercules or the teenager in front of them, is the center of the stage or focus of our attention in place of having localized sound devices the audio can be played around with to guide viewers attention on a more subtle level.
